Archaeology Test

On Monday, we will have our archaeology assessment. Most of the material on the test comes from the archaeology packet, particularly the first page (Essential Questions), page 27 (Understanding History), the vocabulary, and pages 14-21 (Dating the Information, "How Old Is Old").

Students should be prepared to answer the following questions.
Feel free to answer any one of them in the 'Comments" section below!

1. What kinds of sources do historians use to learn about the past?
*Give examples of both written and non-written sources.
   *What does B.A.R.R.F. stand for?

2. What is the difference between a primary and secondary source?
*Give an example of each type of written source.

3. How are the layers (strata) of an archaeological dig set up?
*Why are the layers set up in this way? (See page 13 in your packet)

4. What is cultural diffusion?
*How are ideas spread from one culture to another?
*Give examples of ideas from one culture that have been adopted by another culture.

5. How does an archaeologist determine the age of an artifact, remain, or fossil?
*What is the difference between absolute and relative dating?
*Explain the scientific dating methods we studied:
          *Radiocarbon (C-14)
          *Tree Ring (Dendrochronology)
          *Potassium-argon
*Tell which dating methods would be appropriate for a given set of artifacts. This includes relative and cultural dating as well as scientific dating methods!

How would you determine the age of dinosaur FOSSILS?

How would you determine the age of an ANCIENT ROMAN COIN?

How would you determine the age of an AFRICAN MASK made of wood and human hair?

How would you determine the age of a South African MAN'S LEATHER SANDAL?

How would you determine the age of a Hittite SILVER DRINKING GOBLET?

How would you determine the age of an Egyptian PHARAOH'S HEAD SCULPTURE?

How would you determine the age of an ancient GREEK BOWL made of GOLD with writing on the rim?

How would you determine the age of an Egyptian CAT MUMMY (with kitty still inside!)?

  2. The First pic shows cultural diffusion because their is a picture of a coke sogn with some men in front of it. These men are dressed in robes and clothing that we would typically not see people wearing where we live or where coke was invented. this is a cultural diffusion because its showing the mens culture taking ideas from our culture and mixing the two into one idea. The coke sign also has words in a different language that is not a language native to our culture which shows an idea has spread through different cultures.

I am ready to have that "Fun Activity"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
